Parsons School of New York ‘Fashion Essentials’ Course Assignment
Trips to the mall can either be the highlight of my week or turn out to be the worst day of my life. Being a plus-sized women, the variety of sizes in my closet is insane. I noticed this shopping last summer that all brands create their clothes differently. I could be a size 14 in jeans at one store and a 10 at another. With any body type you don’t know what to expect walking into any store, considering the different materials and fabrics the brand uses.
For this assignment I headed to one of my favourite stores called Dynamite. I tried on a variety of dresses in a couple of their different brand lines and noticed some differences within the dresses. I learned that dresses with side or back zipper, no matter if it was the same identical material as ones with no zipper, I had to size up a couple sizes for the dress to fit comfortably. Dresses with no back or side zipper in the same material I would be the size I normally fit into at Dynamite. Secondly, I learned that various fabrics hug everyone’s body differently. For example, I was shopping with my sister and my other friend, and we all tried on the same silk dress, and I noticed that no matter what shape or size you are, the fabric of the dress caters to your body differently than someone else’s. This can be very misleading and can portray various issues for customers when shopping mentally and emotionally. Although sizes are not standard in all stores, especially different countries, this can trigger feelings of body dysmorphia and confusion for the consumer if they feel they aren’t confident in their own skin.
Body image within the Fashion Industry will always be a sensitive topic to date and although stores are getting more inclusive it will still be a challenge that will be around for a long time. I found this assignment extremely helpful because it made me think of concepts I usually don’t think of when trying clothes on at different stores.
Parsons School of New York ‘Fashion Essentials’ Course Assignment
One year ago, I started my own blog called pardonnemesobsessions.ca. I focus on topics within the Fashion and Entertainment industry whole also focusing on some other things I love such as, books, travelling, and graphic design. Whether I’m talking about my favourite looks from an awards show, fashion week, or reviewing one of my favourite movies and favourite books of the month, I noticed a wide variety of readers who come check out my posts. It is very interesting to see how people discover your site and study the statistics of people accessing and reading your posts.
I used the website application WordPress to design and build out my website and continuously use it for other things within my site as well. WordPress does an amazing job at holding statistics using their own application called “Jetpack” within the program. Jetpack provides you with specific details about who has visited your site, which country they are from and how they discovered your site while also demonstrating the information in graphs and detailed percentages. One thing I found very interesting was discovering where my readers and followers are from. Not only are they my friends in Canada but people all over the world have read my posts. WordPress was able to tell me that people from the United States, United Kingdom, Philippines, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Morocco, Argentina, and the Netherlands have checked out my blog and read various posts. It is very rewarding knowing that someone who can be on the complete other side of the world has read your posts and followed you wanting to read more of your work. The most popular time that my audience visits my website is at 8pm on the weekend or on Wednesdays.
One of the most interesting parts of my research was finding out how my readers access my website. 75% of visitors are through social media. I had a very strong presence on Instagram where I would promote my work on stories, through various engaging posts and even tried TikTok. The other 25% of my readers were discovering my posts through the WordPress community.
This year, the 78th Golden Globes was a virtual affair. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted from the Rainbow Room in New York City and the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, joined by some stunning presenters like Laura Dern, Gal Gadot and Margot Robbie.
Even though, the nominees joined the ceremony in the comforts of their own home, with no huge red carpet event this year, looks were still served! From Anya Taylor-Joy’s stunning green Dior dress, to Elle Fanning’s fairytale Gucci dress, the stars went full out for this TV and film award show.
Take a look down below for my favourite red carpet fashion looks at this year’s Golden Globes!
Amanda Seyfried, Golden Globes 2021
Amanda Seyfried
Now when you are nominated for playing 1930s icon Marion Davies, it only makes sense to channel some ‘Old Hollywood Glamour’ at the Golden Globes. Amanda Seyfried who plays Davies in the film Mank was nominated for her first Golden Globe. Seyfried channelled the Old Hollywood Glamour look perfectly, in a stunning coral pink, Oscar de la Renta gown and beautiful gold waves.
Gal Gadot, Golden Globes 2021
Gal Gadot
Gal Gadot strutted the red carpet in this stunning, white sheer-sleeved, Givenchy dress! She was also dripping in Tiffany diamonds and gorgeous silver sparkly, Rene Caovilla heels. Fans had speculated she was pregnant after this Golden Globe appearance, and on Monday she confirmed the pregnancy with a tweet. “Here we go again” she tweeted, alongside a sweet family photo with her husband, Yaron Varsano, and their two daughter Maya and Alma, cradling her baby bump. How cute is that!
Twitter, Gal Gadot
Elle Fanning, Golden Globes2021
Elle Fanning
Elle Fanning didnt walk the red carpet at the Golden Globes due to the pandemic and the strict number of people who could attend, although that did not stop her from looking like a Disney princess and showing off her Golden Globe glam on Instagram! Fanning channeled Disney’s Elsa in this beautiful long silky pastel dress, curated by Gucci. She wore her hair in a bun and accessorized with Fred Leighton jewels.
Andra Day, Golden Globes 2021
Andra Day
Up next we have the beautiful Andra Day in a gorgeous grey Chanel gown. The nominee AND Golden Globe winner paired the beautiful dress with her hair styled up and some standout Chanel sparkly earrings! The detailing on this dress is immaculate. The embroidering and texture of the gown is really intriguing to the eye! After winning best actress in a motion picture – drama for her role in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, she was surrounded by love, with her mom, dad and rest of the family.
Lily Collins, Golden Globes 2021
Lily Collins
Emily in Paris, nominee Lily Collins went all out for a stunning and BOLD look for the Golden Globes. The beautiful Lily Collins wore a colourful Saint Laurent paisley embroidered one-shoulder dress also channeling ‘Old Hollywood Glamour’ with his side part curls and bold pink lipstick! This look well represented her character in Emily in Paris with the bold colours and also gave a nod to her character in Mank paying homage to ‘Old Hollywood Glamour’.
Dan Levy, Golden Globes 2021
Dan Levy
We cannot forget about the MEN that stole the show with their at home looks!! Dan Levy’s outfits never disappoint anywhere he goes and this Valentino Couture suit paired with a matching sequin top is just what we needed!! The suit Levy wore was one of the first men’s couture looks that debuted in Valentino’s design house’s spring 2021 couture collection.
Josh O’Connor, Golden Globes 2021
Josh O’Connor
Josh O’Connor who won his FIRST Golden Globe for his role as Prince Charles from The Crown, paired up with Loewe and wore an updated version of a classical tuxedo with a black-and-white jacket paired with white trousers and a matching white scarf. The Crown swept the Golden Globes with all their winnings which made me want to watch the show even more…I know I am so late to the game.
Kaley Cuoco, Golden Globes 2021
Kaley Cuoco
Kaley Cuoco was one of the many nominees who again went ALL out for their at-home globes celebration and I AM HERE FOR IT!! She was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series for her role in The Flight Attendant. Cuoco posed at home in her Oscar de la Renta fairytale vibe, princess gown with her hair down! Taking home the Golden Globe, Catherine O’Hara won for her iconic roleplaying Moira in Schitts Creek. As a joke later that night Cuoco posted a photo on Instagram celebrating her loss captioning the picture “I would like to thank…nevermind !!” followed by a ton of emojis.
Kaley Cuoco, Instagram
Margot Robbie, Golden Globes 2021
Margot Robbie
Margot Robbie pulled up to the red carpet yesterday in a gorgeous belted black, Chanel dress with a high-leg slit, accessorized with a Chanel purse. Robbie was not nominated this year for a Globe, she was one of the presenters, although her work has not gone unrecognized. Promising Young Woman a film that Margot Robbie produced with her production company LuckyChap Entertainment received four Golden Globe nominations!
Jane Fonda, Golden Globes 2021
Jane Fonda
Jane Fonda accepted the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes this past Sunday in a stunning fitted cream-coloured suit with Pomellato jewelry, a look she has worn in the past. Her plan was to pick out an outfit she has already worn, due to consumerism. Per People Magazine, Fonda stated “Well, I prefer this kind of outfit than getting dressed up. I vowed a couple of years ago I would never buy any new clothes again. We spend too much money, we buy too many things, and then we get rid of them. We try to develop our identity by shopping, right? We gotta stop that.” LOVE that statement so much! It really does make you think about the industry and the way our minds work when we shop. The Cecil B. DeMille Award is given to those who have made an immense and outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry. Throughout her career, Fonda has made a name for herself as actress, activist, fitness-guru and author.
Isla Fisher, Golden Globes 2021
Isla Fisher
Alright I am all for BOLD colours and creating bold statements. This dress is EVERYTHING!! Isla Fisher celebrated her husband’s Golden Globe in this stunning, Alex Perry gown with padded shoulders, a cinched waist and Stuart Weitzman shoes.
Regina King, Golden Globes 2021
Regina King
Another at home GLAM look!! Regina King zoomed in from a hotel in a sparkling dress by Louis Vuitton, featuring a unique asymmetrical neckline and front panels all sequins accessorized with stunning jewelry from Forevermark. Of course we were all obsessing over her dress at last years Golden Globes but this dress is definitely a stunning follow-up.
Kate Hudson, Golden Globes 2021
Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson “frosted” herself up in a jaw-dropping sparkly off-the-shoulder Louis Vuitton dress and accessorized with STUNNING BVLGARI jewels. While awards season looks different amidst a global pandemic, that doesn’t mean celebrities are holding back in the glam department. For Kate Hudson, that meant over 38 carats in diamonds and a casual 13-carat sapphire ring. Elle magazine, stated that Sophie Lopez, Kate Hudson’s longtime stylist “opted for layers and a cool earring moment” which definitely worked with the Serpenti earrings!
Anya Taylor-Joy, Golden Globes 2021
Anya Taylor-Joy
Saving the best and my favourite for last. Anya Taylor-Joy had an amazing year in not only fashion but acting and the winning streak continues!! She was nominated for both her role in the Queens Gambit and Emma, and took home the Globe for her role in the Queens Gambit. Aside from her win, the 24-year-old actress, stood out at this year’s virtual red carpet, with a sparkly emerald green Dior couture dress and matching coat. The concept of this look was interesting because they related it back to her character “Beth Harmon” whose go-to colour in the show was always green!
These were my favourite looks at this years Golden Globes! Next up we have The Oscars!! Cannot wait to see the fashion that is in store for that award show!!
What were your favourite looks from the 78th Golden Globes? Let me know and comment down below!!
Same Moira…same. The hilarious and iconic Moira from Schitts Creek says it all…award season is the BEST season!! Not only do we get all our favourite celebrities receive awards they deserve but my favourite part has to be the red carpet glam!!
As we all know, tonight marks the 78th annual Golden Globes, celebrating the best moments and acting throughout TV and film. The hilarious duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting!! Sadly, this is just another event COVID has ruined and we wont be able to see all our favourite people in one room or surprising us with incredible looks walking across the red carpet but…we have to make the most of it! The ceremony is virtual, which means the red carpet is as well too! Let’s hope for some at-home, unique red carpet glam that we can remember forever!
This article idea came to me at 12am on Friday and I had to follow through with it because I am having so much fun digging up some pictures and old Golden Globe fashion archives!! I am going to take you back to the beginning of time…kidding the beginning of GOLDEN GLOBE time, and I am going to show you my personal favourite, all time best dresses from this award show!!
Ever since the beginning of the Golden Globes in 1944, the ceremony has conjured up some stunning, all around the world fashion moments. From Old Hollywood Glamour, to 90s poofy gowns, to the unique and storytelling dresses of the 21st century, fashion is forever changing!
I am currently taking a Fashion Industry Essentials course with Parsons School of Design in New York and I most recently learned that what a celebrity wears to a red carpet event defines themselves and is carefully curated and picked to tell a specific story. Especially in the most recent years, other than the fashion, the red carpet has become super hyper-professional. A celebrity can pick how they want to convey so much about themselves based on what they are wearing to a red carpet event.
Here are the BEST Golden Globe red carpet moments of all time!
Marilyn Monroe, 1962
Of course, my number one contender is my icon Marilyn Monroe in 1962. Her sparkly dress and her blonde bob define Old Hollywood Glamour!!
Cher, 1973
Miss Cher! Representing the 70s in this beautiful and distinct fur piece with a fur throw on top!
Melba Moore, 1987
Representing the 80s in this beautiful puff-shouldered red gown, that could appear anywhere on a runway today is the American singer, Melba Moore! Red lipstick matching the bright red dress tells represents a bold and strong personality.
You all know that the 90s was my favourite era…be prepared for quite a few dresses from this time!!! I have decided to show you guys the actresses then and now, demonstrating the style change with each era!
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, 1990 & 2017
Staring off the list in the 90s with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who I call my mom’s twin! Seriously…looking at old pictures of my mom they look identical!! Looking at the 90s I see a mix of elegant and grunge with a touch of class. Moving forward to 2017, the dress choices are a lot more bold and classy as well!
Uma Therman, 1995 & 2014
Uma Therman!!! Don’t you just love seeing the fashion transition statement from the 90s to now?! The fashion looks celebrities take on these days seem to be more bold and create more of a statement compared to before where the red carpet was more of a simple event. As I learned, the red carpet in the past 10 years have been curated and considered much more high profile than ever!
Sandra Bullock, 1998 & 2014
If there is one celebrity I would love to look like I would have to say Sandra Bullock. This girl has NOT aged one bit!! From the classy beaded gown in the 90s to the bold, pink black and blue colours, the range is exquisite!
Cameron Diaz, 1999
Cameron Diaz, 1999
I love this look because it is the great definition of the era. GRUNGE 90s! Her hair and makeup both scream grunge and fun and the look is very different compared to other red carpet 90s looks we’ve seen!
Onto the 2000s!!
Sarah Jessica Parker, 2003
Sarah Jessica Parker, 2003
SJP has had many many red carpet looks but I think this has got to be my favourite!! Now this is not a dress but a classy, silky black corset and loose pants deserve a Golden Globe itself for fashion.
Scarlett Johansson, 2004 & 2020
Our MCU Queen herself…Scarlett Johansson everyone *cue the applause*
Now can we just talk about the STUNNING most unforgettable red dress she wore to the Golden Globes last year?! If that doesn’t scream badass and confident I really don’t know what does!! Everyones eyes were on her fabulous crimson silk faille strapless gown, custom made from Vera Wang and she accessorized it with a stunning diamond necklace!
I could go on forever and ever about every celebrity out there but here are some of my other favourite female celebrities decked out in designer!

Happy Golden Globes day!!!
Follow on Instagram to keep up with fashion trends and specifically what is going on during tomorrow’s Golden Globes!!
It is crazy to think that exactly one year ago today, on Valentine’s Day, my best friend Soph and I were boarding a plane to go visit our other best friend, Jess, in Paris!! We spent our Galentine’s Day on a plane heading towards one of the most beautiful places in Europe. With everything going on in the world now, it feels like such a lifetime ago since we’ve been to Paris and everyday, at least once a day, we talk about how much we miss it. France is such a beautiful place I would go back in a heartbeat! From the architecture, to the scenery and the life in the streets…it is amazing! When travelling is safe to do so and becomes normal once again, my goal is to go back to France and visit Marseille, Nice and Bordeaux!!! I have learned a lot about those places in high school taking French immersion, and they have always been on my never ending bucket list.
In this blog post specifically, I will be talking about the first few days in Paris, with my best friends. There is so much to say about that week-long trip I decided to write two different parts!! Continue reading and travel back to Paris, the “city of love” with my friends and I.
One of the best parts about planning this trip wasn’t only what we were going to do everyday but planning the outfits we would wear going to different places. A couple weeks before we left, Soph and I spent one whole day putting outfits together along with what shoes we would bring, accessories, jackets…we were too prepared for this. We might have brought a lot (in the words of the airport that weighs your luggage) but hey…you never know what you are going to need being in a different country. Let’s face it we love fashion and we are girls we pack…A LOT.
The flight to Paris was around 6-7 hours if I remember correctly. The last time I had been on a flight that long was on my way to Greece with my family, three years ago. I was excited but dreading the long flight because on one hand I got to watch 6 hours of different movies and was in great company of course and on the other…I just wanted to land in Paris already!! Of course sleeping was not something my brain wanted to do. I remember I fell asleep for maybe 30-40 minutes but then woke up with a jump and might have scared Soph a little bit. I even scared myself, it was like I had forgotten I was on a plane. I don’t know what I was dreaming but waking up startled on a plane…not fun but also super funny in the moment.
Around 3 movies and 2 meals of disgusting airplane food later, we FINALLY landed in Paris. We had landed in the morning. I probably looked too much like a tourist with my “À Paris” crewneck on…but hey its not everyday you get to go to the prettiest city in France. The only thing we had to get used to was the 7 hour time difference between Paris and Canada. It was crazy because whenever we talked to family and friends back home, as we were starting our day, they were just winding down. We arrived in Paris hours before our check-in at the hotel. After we dropped off our luggage, we decided to roam the streets and meet up with our friend Jess!!
Walking the streets of Paris was an amazing way to start the trip. We passed by some of the prettiest scenery and huge elegant luxury stores. Honestly in that moment if someone had asked me to move there, I would say yes in a heartbeat.
Here are some of the pictures I took walking to go meet Jess!! We were so excited to see her since it had been one month since she left for the exchange program! After some exciting hellos and catching up, it was time to check in to the hotel. We stayed at Hotel Duquesne and it was beautiful. Our balcony view was all you could ask for, when you’re visiting Paris for the first time.
After we got settled in our hotel room and relaxed a bit, we started getting ready for Jess’ birthday dinner!! We were going to eat at an Italian restaurant called Libertino. It was amazing. In Paris most dining restaurants close mid-day and don’t open till 7:00-7:30 and you usually have to line up at least one hour before and wait for the restaurant to open. This restaurant was really cool and the food was delicious. As you can tell in the picture below we were truffle obsessed. We ordered a truffle pizza and truffle pasta along with some pretty Parisienne drinks.
I would definitely recommend going here if you are ever in Paris! In a separate article I will create a Paris day-to-day travel guide with all the restaurants we visited, attractions you need to visit and scenic places that are definitely a must-go!!
Day 2
Before the most crazy and magical day commenced, we took the metro to a cute and elegant breakfast, tea room called Angelina. It is one of the most talked about places in Paris and it is a restaurant MUST when visiting Paris for the first time!! There is a location in New York City as well. In 1903, confectioner Anton Rumpelmayer founded Angelina with his son René, a beautiful and exquisite tea room, in Paris. The interior of this restaurant is considered “Art Nouveau” with the paintings and details of the structure, which was extremely popular in the 1900s. The interior, designed by the famous Belle Epoque architect Edouard-Jean Niermans, combines elegance and charm. This was where writers, painters and politicians would congregate in the old days. One of the most talked about hot beverages on their savoury menu is their famous hot chocolate! It is so rich, creamy and definitely a must have to split amongst three people.
After a delicious breakfast we headed back onto the metro and went to the most magical place ever…Disneyland!!! Fun fact, I actually did not know this until I searched it up myself, but every castle at every Disneyland park belongs to a different princess, hence the different colours of the castle’s. The castle in Paris is Sleeping Beauty’s castle and it was so pretty!! After exploring the park we went on many rides!! From the Peter Pan Flight ride, to Snow White’s ride to my favourite and thrilling, Pirates of The Caribbean ride…it was definitely a memorable experience. I may have screamed too much with all the jump scares and fast tracks on that ride…but all our reactions is what made it super fun and hilarious. Another memorable part of that day was standing in line, waiting to meet the one and only Mickey Mouse!!! I felt like I was 11 again meeting Mickey for the third time! Honestly being at Disney no matter what age you are is such a fun and special experience, its a rush of nostalgia that floods back the minute you step into the gates.
At the end of the day at Disney they usually have a show with their live cast-mates but depending on weather they sometimes have to switch it up. The weather was really windy that day and there ended up being a crazy rainstorm…which I will get to later. This specific night they decided to do an amazing light show displayed on the castle and let me tell you…it was so heartwarming and amazing, I am pretty sure all three of us had shed a tear at least once during the presentation. They had pulled scenes from almost every Disney movie and played the most popular songs in the background to create one big and memorable masterpiece. It was a perfect way to end off the night.

NOW onto the crazy part of the night. As we were watching the night show it slowly started raining. It started off with a light rain shower and then all the sudden out of nowhere buckets on buckets of rain started pouring down from the sky. We started running to the metro station and by the time we reached the bathroom (that you had to pay 10 cents to get into) we were soaked from head to toe. It looked like we had taken a shower with our clothes on. It was a crazy and funny memorable night and always a good story to tell…minus the cold we felt after being wet for so long on the ride home. Not only were we soaking wet…we were also starving. We picked up some burgers on our walk home from the metro and then went back to the hotel. I remember the vibes in that restaurant/take-out place being so fun and the guys working there being so funny. Everywhere we went in Paris, everyone gave off such a fun vibe and everyone was so nice!
Going back to the first day we arrived in Paris, on our way to the hotel, our Uber driver told us that there was a surprise that happens in Paris, with the Eiffel Tower around 11pm, every night. He would not tell us what it was, since it was our first time in Paris. Soon we came to found out this was one of the most special parts of the trip!! Starting at 11pm on the hour the Eiffel Tower would sparkle for five minutes straight! We had the best view of the Eiffel Tower sparkling from our hotel balcony and that was always an amazing way to end a fun day.
Day 3
Day 3 was tourist day!! We walked all over Paris (yes this time I wore comfortable shoes…learned from my New York City trip) and let me just say AGAIN…there is no place like this one. We started our morning off stopping by a cute little cafe for a croissant and coffee and then headed off to go see the Eiffel Tower!! Seeing the Eiffel Tower up close did not even feel real. It felt like a dream…I’ve only ever seen it in movies and TV shows, that actually physically being there felt breathtaking!! The views from the Eiffel Tower were also stunning. I can’t imagine how pretty it would like if we were able to see the sunset with that view. After spending some time at the Eiffel Tower, we walked some more, hopped on the metro to go see some other historical landmarks. We passed by the Cathedral Notre-Dame which was beautiful yet so sad. They were in the middle of reconstruction due to the fire that broke out one year before on April 19th 2019. I had learned a lot about this Cathedral in school and it was super interesting for me to see it in person, no matter what the circumstance.
A really fun part of the trip for me was being able to practice my French and communicate with some waiters and people in stores. Call me cheesy, but knowing the French language made me feel at home, when in Paris. After exploring the city, we made our way to one of the most popular museums, The Louvre which not only had the prettiest exterior but was also the home to the famous painting the Mona Lisa. Now, you would think that the Mona Lisa is a huge painting but in real life it’s incredibly small! Getting to see The Mona Lisa was a scratch of my travel bucket list. The Louvre is the worlds largest art museum and historic monument in France. Fun fact: there are many hypotheses and a lot of history behind the origin of the museum’s name. One hypothesis originates from the French, and dates from the origins of the current Louvre, when Philippe-Auguste decided to build a fortress around the capital in 1190. The dungeon located along the Seine, later transformed into a royal residence, is a gigantic work, from the verb ouvrer. The work, or the work as they say today, would have given its name to the castle. Another hypothesis comes from Latin, that before the museum was named The Louvre it was named, Lupara which means wolf. Before the museum there was a forest and it used to be named “land of the wolves”. After The Louvre we stopped at a cute restaurant near out hotel for dinner, grabbed some snacks from the grocery store and headed back for a chill night in our room. Ending the night of course with the beautiful sparkling Eiffel Tower.
I have to say, I am glad we had gone to Paris when we did because one week later the museums and many other places were starting to close due to COVID-19. Before all the chaos erupted I like to say that we at least got to have one last memorable vacation before not travelling anywhere for a while again.
Here we come to the end of part 1 of my Paris Diaries! Stay tuned for a part 2 talking about the rest of the trip!!! Also, stay tuned for a Paris Travel Guide that you can use, in the future!!
To be happy you must have taken the measure of your powers, tasted the fruits of your passion, and learned your place in the world.
George Santayana
Jackie Kai Ellis‘ story was definitely an inspiring read. The Measure of My Powers is a moving memoir about a woman raised in a Asian family of academic achievers, with a successful career as a designer, with a charming but controlling husband, who finds herself in the midst of depression; unhappy, unfulfilled feelings of inadequacy.
With her inner struggles and failing marriage that’s childless, she finds hope in her love of food that sparks her to go on a trip to a pastry school in Paris and to open her own bakery where she finally finds self-acceptance and happiness. She then became a food and travel writer, creator of the bespoke food tours of Paris and winner of many awards in her hometown Vancouver and internationally. However she struggled with a lot before she got to where she was now, which is probably the most inspiring part. Ellis suffered from severe bulimia, anorexia, depression, over-bearing parents and as mentioned before a narcissist of a husband.
This story is told in a essay-like format that jumps around the timeline of Ellis’ life. You travel to the Congo, Italy and Paris with her as you turn each page. Reading each description of what she sees you can easily visualize the scenery and feel like you are there with her. As you keep reading you watch her discover her love for food and art. This is the story of one women’s journey to finding herself. I loved how at the end of each chapter she includes a recipe…from delicious desserts to savoury dishes. I am so excited to try baking and cooking some things!!!
Minus the food recipes Ellis included some inspiring and motivational recipes that you can do yourself to see the positivity and clarity of your life. For example, my favourite exercise was “A Recipe for Seeing Beauty”. You start by collecting a rose, placing the rose near your face, allowing each petal to graze your cheek and close your eyes. What do you smell? Ellis states to consider the scent a fragrance. Then place the rose in a cup, next to your favourite book or journal, right next to your bed and as soon as you wake up in the morning, before opening your eyes breathe in that lovely scent again. Remember the beauty and feelings you had while smelling it, start the day of with a lovely feeling.
For anyone looking for their next amazing read, I would definitely recommend this memoir. It will inspire you to be your best self, to work at what you truly desire and how to overcome obstacles and put your own needs first!!
‘There are moments in life that we may regret. We think of them as mistakes, still feeling the pangs, before we gently remind ourselves that the circumstances, actions, words spoken and the choices we make are mere stones that pave the road we explore, perfect in its own way. And the more of the road we see, the less we tend to regret.’
This quote really stood out to me because, last year, with the help of my friends, I learned a lot about myself and about the term regret. I learned that every decision you make you should never regret anything. No matter what the outcome is, you will always learn from your mistakes and everything happens for a reason to lead you on the path you are on now!! Always put yourself and your happiness first and always make sure you are doing everything right by yourself! The key to happiness is self-love.

For this week’s article I decided to do something a little different. I’m going to tell the story of how fashion has evolved through pictures and fun descriptions! I created this fashion zine in my third year of university and had so much fun making it! How could I not share it with all you guys?!
From the 1910’s to 2010, various trends have evolved and made a huge comeback, that many love! It is so fascinating to study the different styles that have come and gone over the years!! Roaring 20’s, High Society 50’s and Grunge 90’s are my all time favourite fashion era’s!! I love how every fashion era possesses a bold and unique statement that makes each and every year unique in it’s own way!
Happy New Year everyone!!! Let’s make 2021 a good one!! I thought I would start this year off with some movie reviews!! Enjoy!!
Who misses going to the movie theatres?! I know I do!! I always loved going to watch a new movie or heading to a movie premiere with my friends and family!! Everyone has to agree that besides the movie, the best part about the theatres was…the popcorn…nothing can ever beat movie theatre popcorn. Since movie theatres have been closed I have made my own movie theatre in my bedroom. This last week of winter break I have been on a serious movie binge. From thrillers, to cheesy romances, to 3 hour long movies, at any time of day I was watching a movie. Many of you may be thinking “Does she not have a life?” and honestly that is true with us being in lockdown again…KIDDING I obviously do other things than spending all day watching movies to keep myself busy! I am just a movie fanatic and watching movies is just my favourite time of the day!! If you don’t know what to watch and need a new movie, here is a list of some of my favourite titles I have watched this week!!
Soul
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Soul is full of surprises and a truly inspiring movie!! Disney & Pixar’s Christmas gift to us all! I watched this movie with my little brother and he loved it too! Not only will little kids love it but it will definitely have a deeper meaning for adults watching this film. Soul follows middle school teacher Joe Gardner, voiced by Jamie Foxx who finally gets to live out his dream at the best Jazz club in town. Hours after he hears the news, he has an accident that takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical, vivid place where new souls find their personalities, quirks and interests before heading to Earth. On a mission to return to Earth, he teams up with soul 22, voiced by Tina Fey, who does not understand the purpose of living life. As Joe is showing 22 the best parts about life, along the way he discovers and learns some of life’s important lessons. This film made me cry, made me laugh and made me smile. The animations were exquisite and vivid, the movie seemed so real!!! Soul takes life lessons and clarity to the next level. I honestly did not know I liked Jazz until I heard some of the amazing pieces throughout the film. Anyone looking for a cute, meaningful movie, definitely watch Soul! You can stream Soul on Disney+.
A side note, Adobe Creative Cloud has partnered up with Pixar, Disney and the movie Soul and created a contest where you get a chance to design a soundtrack cover for the movie. I love graphic design and decided to take a chance and enter. Down below you’ll see both my submissions. I used both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator and had so much fun creating these pieces! I love drawing and putting graphics together it has to be my favourite thing to do!! My absolute favourite is definitely the second submission. The colours and animations perfectly describe the Jazz, clarity and the meaning of music in the movie. Slide on the photo down below to get a glance at both designs created by myself!!

All My Life
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 5 out of 5.
Warning: Grab a tissue box before watching this film. Not only did this film make me bawl my eyes out, but this story was really touching. All My Life is based on a true story of a young couple from Toronto, Solomon Chau, played by Harry Shum Jr. and Jennifer Carter, played by Jessica Rothe. From the moment they meet, they automatically click and fall in love with each other. Jennifer and Solomon are your vision of the perfect, happy, newly engaged couple who are ready to spend their lives together. After Solomon is diagnosed with terminal cancer, their hopes for a summer wedding starts diminishing. As days and doubting moments go by, their family and friends put together an inspirational plan, and raise money to help Jennifer and Solomon have their dream wedding. Not only does the movie have an amazing soundtrack that fast-forward’s the tears, but the chemistry between the two characters really emphasizes the relationship and the story the real couple had, as if the viewers knew exactly who they were. One part that really tugged on my heartstrings, was the end of the movie during the credits, they showed footage from the actual couple’s wedding…that was so heartwarming and I automatically started bawling. I think this movie also taught me that you never know what could happen in your life and you have to make sure you live life to the fullest when you can, no matter what may happen. When you are surrounded by amazing friends and family anything is possible. You can stream All My Life on Soap2Day.
Drive
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
ALRIGHT who doesn’t love Ryan Gosling?! He is an amazing actor, and this movie is one of his best works. Drive follows Ryan Gosling’s character Driver, who is a skilled Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway car for criminals. Driver holds a guard up, until he starts growing closer to his neighbour Irene played by Carrie Mulligan and her younger son Benecio. When Irene’s husband gets out of jail, he confides in Driver to help him finish a million-dollar heist that he hadn’t got to start before he went to jail. When the heist takes a terrifying turn, Driver does anything in his power to protect Irene and Benecio from the consequences about to arise. This movie honestly came with so many surprises and jumping out of your seat moments…literally, it kept you on your toes! Now, the first 30 minutes of the movie were slow but as soon as you pass that 30-minute mark, you are met with the craziest plot twisting movie of your life. Also, a warning the cars and gunshots are going to scare the crap out of you if your volume is above 13, definitely turn on subtitles or you’ll find yourself turning up the volume when they talk and turning it down when you hear a gun or a car motor. Drive can be streamed on Soap2Day.
Secret Obsession
⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 3 out of 5.
Secret Obsession was such a fun watch. This movie kept you on your toes throughout the entire time. Secret Obsession is a psychological thriller, that follows a girl named Jennifer, played by Brenda Song, who wakes up with amnesia after a traumatic attack. When she wakes up, Russell, her caring husband (or so you think) is there to put all the pieces back together to help her remember all events in her life. As society seems to think “If a man is too perfect, there must be something wrong” and in this situation there definitely is something wrong. If you are looking for a edge of your seat thriller, this is definitely your movie. You will tend to notice, Brenda Song grunts in pain more than speaking actual words throughout the entire movie. You can stream Secret Obsession on Netflix.
The Skulls
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
Okay hands down one of the best movies I have watched this week. I would like to dedicate one full star to Paul Walker. Rest in peace to this amazing actor, who was taken from us way too young. I would also like to dedicate one full star to Joshua Jackson because as you guys know from other articles, he is one of my favourite actors ever…TEAM PACEY ALL THE WAY! Skulls tells the story of a prestigious Ivy League campus that runs a secret society where power and the status of elite is bred. Only few are chosen to be a part of this league where they are treated like royalty and where wealth comes easy for all of them. It is a dream come true when student Luke McNamara played by Joshua Jackson, gets chosen to be a part of the skulls until murder befalls a close friend of his. Now you know that Tiktok that says “I aint never seen two pretty best friends…” well Joshua Jackson and Paul Walker in this movie ARE those two pretty best friends. This movie was filmed in Toronto, which you can recognize by the scenery and streets! Not only are the characters in the movie compelling but the mystery beyond the storyline is a puzzle in your mind, where you think you may know the answer, but you will not expect what is coming. You all know my love for 90s movies, and this has made the favourites list. You can stream this movie on Soap2Day.
Drive Me Crazy
⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 3 out of 5.
DRUM ROLL FOR THE 90s ICONIC MOVIES PLEASE…90s romcoms are my favourite comfort movies ever. No matter the cheesy storyline or movie trope I love them. This movie features Melissa Joan Heart who plays Nicole Maris and Adrien Grenier who plays Chase Hammond. Nicole and Chase were close as ever when they were younger, both live next door to each other but now in high school are very different worlds apart. However, they both plan a scheme to date each other in order to get the people they really want jealous. Throughout their “fake dating” they both realize that what they wanted may be much much closer than they thought. Yes this is a cheesy 90s romcom but I say we need more movies like this to this day. You can stream Drive Me Crazy on Soap2Day or any site you can find it on!!
Promising Young Woman
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Promising Young Woman follows a young girl named Cassie played by Carie Mulligan who has an interesting hobby. After a traumatizing assault involving her best friend Nina occurs while she was in med school, she drops out and never was the same. She entraps men at night, while pretending to be very drunk and sometimes unconscious, revealing to them that their own perception of a moral code is a form of denial and catches men in the act before they do something they regret. This movie was so perfectly curated and Carey Mulligan was amazing. Promising Young Woman is a roller coaster. I honestly did not expect the ending to this movie. Fennel, the writer really surprised everyone. You would think that there is nothing left to do to create revenge in order for Cassie and everyone to feel satisfied, however she pushes right through that wall with the final act that definitely divided audiences! Anyone looking for a kick ass girl power movie definitely watch this!! It is available to stream on Soap2Day!
Acquainted
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
To be completely honest I only wanted to watch this movie because actor Giacomo Giannotti is featured in this film and who doesn’t love seeing Dr. Deluca on their screens?! I also loved the fact that Acquainted is based and filmed in Toronto. This movie follows former college classmates who run into each other at a bar and automatically have a captivating bond. In result, this leads to both Drew played by Giacomo Giannotti and Emma played by Laysla De Oliveira, questioning their long-term relationships and where they stand. I am a total sucker for movies like this. They are my guilty pleasure. The thing I loved about this movie was how real the chemistry between the characters were and how realistic the storyline was compared to other romance novels. You get to see the characters work out their problems and come to a realistic conclusion rather than a higher expectation, typical movie ending. Another thing I loved about this movie was that they were filming in a ton of my favourite spots Downtown. The club where Drew and Emma reunite is Apartment 200! A fun and chill bar on Queen St, with retro gaming machines and vintage décor. They also filmed at the famous Distillery! I love when movies are filmed in Toronto, it brings back fun memories and is so fascinating to see the city on the big screen!! Toronto represents! Acquainted can be streamed on Amazon Prime!
Taxi Driver
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Taxi Driver was released in 1976 written by Paul Schrader and directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie focuses on themes of loneliness and urban decay, while taking place in New York City in the 1970’s. Martin Scorsese is an ICONIC director and his movies never disappoint. Taxi Driver features Robert De Niro playing the character of Travis who was a ex-marine and Vietnam veteran , who works as a taxi driver in New York City. When Travis meets a campaign worker Betsey, played by Cybil Shepard, he becomes obsessed with the idea of saving the world. He plots his first mission to rescue a 12-year-old prostitute, Iris, played Jodie Foster, from her pimp. In my opinion, this is a true masterpiece of Scorsese. His films are both beautiful and have an edgy tone to them. This film really captures the true essence of New York City in the 70s. Before New York City was known as “the city that never sleeps” the city was much different and scarier if you did not live there. X-rated theatres, sex shops and pimps and prostitutes were the norm. Another thing I found fascinating about this movie was Robert De Niro’s character Travis. Robert De Niro has been in many iconic performances and is a loved actor by many. He delivers an excellent performance of loneliness, isolation and social awareness. His character’s transformation is intriguing as you see him go from mentally unstable to mental madness, cold blooded character, when he takes certain actions (I will not spoil don’t worry). Overall an amazing movie, if you are looking for an edgy film this is definitely your pick! You can stream Taxi Driver on Crave.

Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella
Rating: 4.5/5 Stars!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
My first and most favourite read of the month was Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella. Shoutout to my best friend Soph for buying me this for my birthday…one of my favourite gifts! Not only is the cover super cute but the storyline was just as good! The characters in this novel were relatable and portrayed a realistic vision of young woman and man getting into a relationship. The story follows a young female named Ava, who believes love should not be found on the many filtered dating apps that categorize your preferences of men based on height or their astrological sign. She believes in real feelings not algorithms. After going through a recent breakup and totally being over dating apps she decides to take a break from the dating and social media world and goes on a writing retreat in Italy to finish her novel. The fascinating thing about this retreat is that you are not allowed to use your real name or give away any personal details about yourself. Your main goal is to focus on your novel without anyone’s personal lives getting in the way of your writing. Each individual on the retreat has to come up with a different name. When a martial arts retreat gets cancelled on the island, Ava who now goes by “Aria” meets a young man named “Dutch” who seem to click right away. Immediately they both fall in love without the pressures of reality setting in. Breaking the rules, they both allow each other to ask one personal question a day. It isn’t until they both go back to London and their true identities “Ava” and “Matt’ settle in, that they realize the fantasy is over and their true selves are let out of the bag. As the fantasy starts the fade, they realize how different both their personal lives are. From food habits, to annoying habits and interests…are they really compatible? Will they be able to overcome their differences and adapt to each other’s lives? Read this book to find out!!! I found this novel to be relatable in the sense that I think the same way as Ava…I don’t like dating apps and believe they are trash. It was refreshing to see a novel that touches on relationships where both individuals are completely different and go through different obstacles that both try to overcome in order for the relationship to work. I also loved how Ava travelled to Italy for a writing retreat, that is a dream of mine!! Working on a novel in Italy?! I’d be gone in a flash!
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Rating: 4/5 Stars!
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
I was super excited to read this novel because the show Little Fires Everywhere had premiered earlier this year! Again, shoutout to my best friend Jess for giving me this fantastic read for my birthday! I am that nerd who likes to read the book before watching a movie or TV show and I have to say, the directors did such an amazing job following along with the storyline except changed up the ending, which only made sense for the show to start up a second season. The storyline follows a mother-daughter duo who move every so often and upend their lives and the picture-perfect Richardson family. Mia Warren and her daughter Pearl Warren, move to Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1977 and become tenants of Elena Richardson. The Richardson family is sought out to be this perfect family with no flaws however when a huge legal battle tears the town apart, both families uncover disturbing and real truths about themselves and the past that disrupt everything. The novel also emphasizes the topic of motherhood and displays the true power of what they would do to not only protect themselves but would go to any lengths to protect their kids. The ambition and message of this novel is super powerful, and I was so glad to see Reese Witherspoon bring this book to life. I loved that the novel was set in the 70s because you got to read about a different era and see how different life was even with the smallest rules that were set. I definitely recommend reading this novel, I finished it in one night, I could not put it down.
Josh & Hazel’s Guide to Not Datingby Christina Lauren
Rating: 4/5 Stars!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
The third read of the month was following one of my favourite tropes…best friends who fall in love with one another, without realizing until…they see them with other people. Another guilty pleasure read. Christina Lauren’s novels are all my favourite because it always follows a relationship trope that everyone always loves. Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating follows Hazel who is “a lot to take” in her words and believes no men is up for the challenge of sticking around and dealing with her. She is honestly such a good person just looking to have fun wherever she is! She is a light in a dark room. Then there’s Josh, who has known Hazel since college…since she threw up on his shoes at a party and is the complete mellow opposite of Hazel. Fast-forward 10 years later they meet again, only for Hazel to find out Josh’s ex cheated on him and has completely turned his life upside down. Now that’s where Hazel comes in and starts being the breath of fresh air and ball of fun that Josh has always needed in his life. Although that doesn’t mean they date…at least not each other. Instead, they pick dates for one another and setup a double-blind date every week, that progressively gets worse and worse each passing week. Setting each other up on horrible blind dates means there is nothing between them…right? This novel is both funny and touching at the same time. Watching both Josh and Hazel setting each other up when it is super clear as a reader that the connection and tension between the two characters is there, is such a fun and frustrating read! A Christina Lauren novel isn’t a Christina Lauren novel without a little bit of steamy scenes in it, so that is a bonus! Christina Lauren novels never disappoint, I will always recommend these novels to anyone looking for a fun romance to read! Also, shoutout to Christina Lauren for noticing my story and reacting to it, which made my entire week!!!
Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover
Rating: 4.5/5 Stars!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Alright I am super excited to talk about this novel because it is written by one of my all-time favourites…Colleen Hoover!! I will forever be a die-hard Co-Ho fan and will forever recommend her novel to anyone and everyone looking to read a heart-dropping, emotional, fun…rollercoaster read. Heart Bones has such a meaningful title, and you don’t realize the significance till later on in the story and after finding out what it means your heart will melt. The story follows a young girl named Beyah who has not had her life given to her on a silver platter. She has made it so far on her own without the help of her rich daddy and her mother who is a drug addict. An unexpected death leaves Beyah with nowhere else to go but to her dad’s summer house in Peninsula, Texas who she hardly sees and knows. Her plan was to stick it out for the summer, head low and not making friends till she has to leave that dreadful place and head to college although her neighbour Samson, disrupts that plan. Samson and Beyah have nothing in common, Beyah comes from a life of poverty where Samson comes from a life of wealth. The one thing they do have in common is that they are both drawn to sad things. There connection is to tense, and they decide to both have a low-key summer fling till they both have to go their separate ways on August 2nd. Although, things are too good to be true and Beyah can’t ever seem to get a break in life. Can Beyah and Samson overcome the rip current that’s about to wash away their little fling? Read this novel to find out!! Colleen Hoover always finds a way to throw you off in her novels. I will literally be sitting in bed, thinking everything is normal then suddenly I find myself gasping and putting the book down to process the shocking turning point she threw into the storyline. It is always unexpected and something that you could never even think will happen in the story and Colleen Hoover thinks of it and makes it 1000000 times more dramatic and entertaining. It’s the turning points in her novels that not only make the storyline unique but also distinguishes her characters from other novels by not making them “basic” instead adding a little spice to their lives. This novel was just released in July and definitely has summer vibes although is a fantastic read. Anyone and everyone should definitely read this! Shoutout to Colleen Hoover for seeing my stories and replying to my messages on Instagram! Truly a dream come true!
I hope you guys are influenced to go out and purchase some of these books for your next read!!
Hopefully how you’ll react watching the list of amazing shows down below…
(In my opinion…)
Throughout the course of 2020 I have watched way too many TV series than I can count, and I have so much to say about all of them. Not only were some of the best series created in 2020 but many old series resurfaced the internet this year. These are some of my favourite TV shows I’ve watched this year!! From mystery, to thriller, to family, to romance and comedy, if you are looking for your next binge watch this list will definitely help find the right show for you!
The Affair
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Hands down one of my favourite series I’ve watched this year (and it’s not just because Joshua Jackson is in this). The Affair follows two characters Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and Alison Bailey (Ruth Wilson) and shows the aftermath of an extramarital relationship between the two characters. Alison is a young waitress trying to fix her marriage with her husband Cole Lockhart (Joshua Jackson) after tragedy broke out between the two of them and Noah is a New York City teacher and novelist, who is married with 4 kids. The two characters meet at a small-town diner in the city of Montauk where Noah and his family go away for the summer. The show unfolds after the two characters meet and they automatically have a strange connection and are drawn to each other. I think the most interesting part of this series is that the episodes are shown in different parts, which also means they are shown in different perspectives of each character. “There are two sides to every story but only one truth”. When I tell people about the show this is the first thing I say. Each character sees things and events differently down to clothes, hair and the way the situation is perceived, it’s crazy. The different point of views starts right from the first episode. My theory is that you don’t know the exact truth until you watch the recaps at the beginning of each episode to help you clarify who to believe. I am not sure if this is entirely true, but I did notice a pattern. The episodes are usually divided between Noah’s POV and Alison’s POV and later broadens to Cole’s POV and Helen, Noah’s wife’s POV. The show always finds a way to keep you on your toes. The show has 5 seasons. Season 1, 2, 4 and the second half of 5 are the best. Season 3 gets good halfway through but hold on till season 4 because the writers take a HUGE turn in the show and it is so shocking. I accidentally spoiled season 4 for myself and I hated myself for it because I did not expect what had happened to happen. Forewarning, there is a lot of sex…I mean it is called The Affair so careful if you watch around your parents. Honestly such a good series, I had never been so happy about an ending for a show in a long time, this one had a heartwarming one.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 5 out of 5.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace was produced and directed by Ryan Murphy. The show focuses on the story of Gianni Versace’s murder and does such an amazing job telling the story. Ryan Murphy does his best to recreate storylines with evidence and profound research to tell the story as accurately as possible. One of the things I love the most about Ryan Murphy’s work is that he carefully picks out his cast and spends a lot of time making sure the cast and roles are perfect, whether that is using the same actors or actresses from previous shows he has worked on or spending days finding someone new, his casting is always on point. Specifically, for this show, the cast is what brought the storyline to life even more. Edgar Ramirez plays Gianni Versace, Penelope Cruz plays his sister Donatella Versace and Ricky Martin plays Versace’s boyfriend, Antonio D’Amico. Lastly the very talented Darren Criss plays the compelling character of Andrew Cunanan, the one who murdered Versace. At the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards the show had received the most nominations and won awards including “Outstanding Limited Series”, “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series” for actor Darren Criss. The interesting this about this show was that instead of telling the story in chronological order they opened the series with the murder of Versace and tells the story backwards. Every new show of the series happens chronologically before the previous, that goes deeper into the storyline of each of Cunanan’s victims and how Andrew Cunanan childhood and experiences led him to being a pathological liar and spree killer. Not to mention, the soundtrack of this movie is AMAZING! The best 90s songs played throughout the show!! If you are a 90s fan that will definitely make the watch even better for you!
Dawson’s Creek
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 5 out of 5.
Alright if you know me, you know that I became OBSESSED with this show a couple months back and I am currently re-watching it for the third time. Thank you, Nat! This show is amazing everyone needs to watch it. I would categorize this show as the “pre-One Tree Hill” era and it’s a good 90s comfort show. The show ran from 1988-2003. Dawson’s Creek is about a close-knit group of teenagers who experience high school and university together and the struggles that both bring on. Dawson’s Creek is known for its ground-breaking storylines that covered everything from mental health, to sexuality and even the most talked about famous TV love triangle of all time. The show focuses on characters Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), Joey Potter (Katie Holmes), Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), Jen Lindley (Michelle Williams) and later also joins Jack (Kerr Smith) and Andie McPhee (Mandy Munroe). You grow up with all these characters throughout 6 different seasons and watch how one situation can alter their entire lives. This show makes me want to time travel back to the 90s. Just the fashion and simplicity of how life seemed to be back then, with no phones and social media, everything seemed “real” and down to earth. The main reason I am telling every girl to watch this show is because of Pacey Witter played by Joshua Jackson. Even though the show is called Dawson’s Creek everyone subtly hates Dawson, and everyone watches it for Pacey. He is hands down the best character in that show. Besides Pacey, this show is an amazing comfort show and brings on laughter, tears and has an ending nobody will expect at all. As you watch the show on Netflix you will realize that the original theme song that was featured with the show when it premiered (in the video above), is not the same theme song that is played in the episodes on Netflix. Netflix did not have the streaming rights to include the original song, apparently the song was never licensed for streaming rights so they had to make that change.
The Undoing
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 5 out of 5.
My best friend and I finished The Undoing, and that show was hands down amazing. This was the first show I had not searched up any spoilers about plot or characters (I know I ruin every show for myself) and I was going crazy trying not to search up the BIG question of who the murderer was. I did a pretty good job of staying away from Twitter, Instagram and any social media platforms after the season finale of this show premiered because almost everyone was talking about it and I had heard so many good things about the show and couldn’t wait to watch it. This show consists of 6 episodes ranging from 50 minutes to one hour. The cast features Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant and Edgar Ramirez. The storyline follows Grace Fraiser (Nicole Kidman) a psychologist whose world turns upside down when her husband Jonathan (Hugh Grant) is a suspect for the murder of Elena Alvarez (Matilda De Angelis) a parent in the private school community. It amazed me to see how they can fit all of the show’s drama, lies and secrets into only 6 episodes but they succeeded. Even though from the beginning it was fairly obvious who the killer was, this show had you believing every single character was a suspect based on lies and secrets that would be unfolding after every episode and had you second guess as the viewer who you thought the murderer was. Not only does the show play with your mind but it also takes place in the best place of all time…New York City. Watching the show was making me miss my NYC travels. The show is jam-packed right from the beginning and keeps you on your toes. This show was based off the book You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz. I am usually the type of person to read the book before watching the show or movie, but I had found out afterwards it was based off a book. If the show was this good, I already know the book will be even better. Even though, a season 2 is probably on everyone’s minds, I do believe that the show should end after season 1. There is no way the producers could beat the suspense, the tension that the first season brought along. It would only feel like the writers would be dragging the storyline on and on. Lastly, shoutout to Nicole Kidman and her AMAZING and elegant fashion sense, from the trench coats to her classy dresses…the fashion makes her character even more intriguing. Anyone interested in this series could definitely finish it in one day. If you ever have a lazy day and nothing to do, take 6 hours out of your day and binge this. It will be the best decision of your life.
Schitt’s Creek
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
If you are looking for a Canadian comedy, this sitcom is PERFECT for you!!! Schitt’s Creek is about the filthy-rich Rose family that goes bankrupt. They are forced to leave their home and riches to stay in the one asset they are left with…a small town named Schitt’s Creek, which the father bought as a joke year’s back. The family is forced to live in a motel until they can rebuild their funds and move away from this small-town life that they are definitely not used to. This show follows the four family members, Moira Rose played by Catherine Ohara, Johnny Rose played by Eugene Levy, David Rose played by Dan Levy and Alexis Rose played by Annie Frances. The 6 seasons this show has to offer demonstrates the true meaning of family coming together and learning to make the most out of a situation that changed their lives forever. The phrase “Money can’t buy happiness” is one of the main things not only the Rose family learns but also what you as a viewer learn while watching the show. The dry and subtle humour in this show is one of my favourite things about it. This sitcom is produced and written by the Canadian father-son duo Dan Levy and Eugene Levy. In my opinion it is the Canadian version of Modern Family. This show has won 9 Emmy awards this year and they deserved them all!!
Normal People
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 5 out of 5.
Normal People is about two characters Marianne and Connell, their secret friendship and their on and off again relationship. They are two young individuals who tend to drift apart many times throughout their lives only to always find their way back to each other. All they have in common, is that they grew up in the same town, Dublin, Ireland. The story starts when Marianne played by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Connell played by Paul Mescal, are in high school and each chapter demonstrates a certain amount of time that has passed throughout their lives and friendship. This show is based off the book Normal People by Sally Rooney. The writers and producers did an amazing job bringing the story to life. From storylines to even words the characters would say…it was so good. The casting was perfect as well!!! Reading the novel, I had certain visions of what the characters would look, act like and when I saw the show, they chose characters exactly like the description. From looks, to hand gestures and body language it was perfect. This show was refreshing in the way that you got to see realistic views and scenarios of an awkward, real and normal relationship and not something you would only see in movies or tv shows that would set the bar so high making it unrealistic. This is a cute and again real demonstration of a romance. The show is 12 episodes and like the book ends in a cliff-hanger, but it is the kind of cliff-hanger where you get to choose for yourself what happens with the characters. Everyone wanted a season 2 however because of the way the show and book had ended it was up to you to decide whether they are together, whether they aren’t, it’s up to you to determine that. If they were to come out with a second season, I would be so happy, but this is an example of a show, like The Undoing, where I don’t think you can beat the original season.
American Horror Story: 1984
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
The American Horror Story franchise is probably one of my favourite horror, thriller TV series. If you know me, you know I am a huge horror fanatic and will watch any horror movie any time of day. This series is directed and produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck. I am a huge fan of Ryan Murphy’s work; he has a fascinating way of bringing different concepts to life. It also fascinates me that he can create a show like Glee and then go in the completely opposite direction with a show like American Horror Story. Each season of the show focuses on an entirely different storyline relating to various horror concepts and old horror stories bringing them to life. Murphy also selects his actors and actresses very carefully and you’ll notice throughout the series that he uses many of the same actors throughout the different seasons. The season I watched for the first time this year was the newest season of the series called 1984. This show takes place in 1984, where five friends leave Los Angeles for the summer and head over to work as counselors at Camp Redwood. This camp is filled with ghosts, killers and a complicated history. The main killer that started this whole fiasco is named “Mr. Jingles”. Many years back Mr. Jingles slaughtered all the kids at the camp and one of the counselors decided to reopen the camp to place revenge on Mr. Jingles who had recently escaped. Anyone who ever dies at this camp still walks the grounds and are stuck at the camp in afterlife, to interact with humans that cross the camp. Not only was the storyline funny and different the soundtrack was amazing. All the 80s hits would play at the beginning of the show and appear throughout the episodes and the wardrobe choices were iconic! Definitely one of Ryan Murphy’s best seasons of American Horror Story!! I cannot wait more seasons to come!
Little Fires Everywhere
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
The show, Little Fires Everywhere, is based off the book Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng. Overall, the show followed pretty close to the book except for the ending…which I promise I will not spoil. The cast includes Reese Witherspoon who plays Elena Richardson, Kerry Washington who plays Mia Warren and my favourite Joshua Jackson who plays Bill Richardson (which was another bonus watching this show). The show premiered back in March. The plotline follows a mother-daughter duo who move every so often and upend their lives and the picture-perfect Richardson family. Mia Warren and her daughter Pearl Warren played by Lexi Underwood, move to Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1977 and become tenants of Elena Richardson. The Richardson family is sought out to be this perfect family with no flaws however when a huge legal battle tears the town apart, both families uncover disturbing and real truths about themselves and the past that disrupt everything. The show also emphasizes the topic of motherhood and displays the true power of what they would do to not only protect themselves but would go to any lengths to protect their kids. The acting in this show is amazing, from the adults to the kids, it was really well done. I always comment on the soundtrack and a lot of the time music can make a scene much more powerful and meaningful and that’s exactly what the show did. The soundtrack all had similar vibes and was carefully picked for each scene.
The Haunting of Bly Manor
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
The Haunting of Bly Manor is the sequel to the 2018 hit horror show, The Haunting of Hill House. If you are a bookworm then you’d be happy to know that this series is based off the 1898 novella by Henry James, The Turn of the Screw. The series focuses on a young woman who moves to England and takes a job at an English manor as an au pair for two young orphans who have experienced a tremendous amount of loss in their short lives. This season takes place in the 80s, so the soundtrack is amazing, you’ll hear hits from Cyndi Lauper and get a taste of the 80s fashion. The new season features some old faces from the previous including Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Victoria Pedretti. The cast members remain the same although the storyline is completely different, which means you can start the second season without having watched the first. Both seasons focus on grief and how the characters pass through it with hauntings from their past coming after them. Victoria Pedretti does an amazing job in this series and really puts emphasis on the storyline and her character with her amazing acting. The Haunting of Bly Manor focuses on “the lady in the lake” who has haunted Bly manor for centuries who takes the lives of those who cross her path. This show is haunting and gives you all the right jump scares so be prepared for that. The way, director Mike Flanagan plays out these storylines and roles is so carefully curated; each episode is a continuous story of the character’s background story which intrigues you to binge the whole series in one night. As a viewer you are shocked and surprised from the revelation of each episode, which leads to a bittersweet ending. If you are a fan of horror and thriller, this show is perfect for you. This show does give you the creeps for those of you who aren’t horror fanatics although, the story behind the jump scares is remarkable.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set in the fictional town of Greendale. It is about a young teenage girl named Sabrina Spellman played by Kiernan Shipka, who is half-witch and half-mortal, who fights off evil forces that not only threaten herself, but her family, friends and the town of Greendale. Sabrina’s mortal friends are Harvey Kinkle played by Ross Lynch, Theo Putnam played by Lachlan Watson and Rosalind Walker played by Jaz Sinclair. The show focuses on both Sabrina’s relationships with the mortal world and the dark world of hell, where she tries to choose between staying mortal or becoming a full-time witch. Besides the dark magic the show also focuses on aspects of teen life including romance, change and emotional teenage issues. There are 3 parts to this show and the 4th and final part is premiering December 31st, 2020. Netflix decided to cancel the show after the fourth season, which fans were not too happy about. This series is an adaptation of the 90s sitcom, Sabrina The Teenage Witch. Although the reimagined series is a coming-of-age story which takes a dark turn with witchcraft and horror. As descriptions of the show state this show as “horror”, it is not so much of a horror, in my opinion, as it just is a dark reboot of the original popular 90s sitcom and is also based on the Archie Comic series of the show.
